What Makes a Garden Window Different

A garden window works like a tiny greenhouse. Because it projects out from the wall, typically about 16 to 24 inches deep, light comes in from three sides and the top. That gives you:

  • A growing shelf. Basil, mint, green onions and small orchids do well on the sill.
  • More light over the sink. Kitchens with one small window feel noticeably brighter.
  • A little extra space. The box adds depth without moving a wall.
  • Ventilation. Many garden windows have side vents that open, which helps clear cooking heat and steam.

How Much Does a Garden Window Cost?

According to Angi, a garden window costs about $2,500 installed on average, with most falling between $1,200 and $3,650 or more.

Frame material Typical cost per window, installed (national)
Aluminum $900 to $2,600
Vinyl $1,000 to $3,100
Fiberglass $1,100 to $3,200
Wood $1,200 to $3,800

Source: Angi. Other things that change the price:

  • Size. A common 24 x 24 inch unit costs far less than a large 48 x 48 inch window.
  • Fixed or venting. Units with opening side vents cost more than fully fixed ones, but they are worth it in a hot kitchen.
  • Glass. Low-E and double-pane glass add cost and cut heat gain.
  • The opening. Replacing an existing window of the same size is simplest. Enlarging the opening adds about $2,000 to $3,000.

Things to Know Before Adding One in Hawaii

Sun and heat

Glass on the top and sides means a lot of sun. On a west-facing wall, Low-E glass keeps the shelf from cooking your plants and keeps the kitchen cooler.

Clearance outside

The box sticks out, so it cannot block a walkway, a side yard gate or a lanai path. We check this before recommending one.

Rain and salt air

The top glass and flashing need to shed heavy windward rain. Vinyl frames resist rust and do not need painting, which is why they are a common choice here.

Garden Window vs. Bay Window

Both project out from the wall. A garden window is smaller and mostly used over a sink for plants and light. A bay window is larger, often has a seat, and changes the feel of a whole room. If you just want a brighter kitchen with a growing shelf, a garden window usually costs less and installs faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a garden window replace my kitchen window?

Usually, yes. Most garden windows fit an existing opening over the sink. If the opening is unusual, we can size a unit to fit or adjust the opening.

Do garden windows open?

Many do. The most common design has side vents that crank or slide open while the front and top stay fixed.

Are garden windows hard to clean?

The inside is easy to reach from the sink. The outside glass can be rinsed with a hose, and the top glass sheds most dirt when it rains.
